Day 11- In the Ice - Not yet Stuck

Over the past days we encountered the usual Antarctic sea-ice. The further south you are getting the thicker and impenetrable it gets. Looking at the GPS log, the ship makes turns and twists and hits the ice going back and forward. On the map the forward and backward is off-set by the current and the drift of the sea-ice. Otherwise its white with thousand different shades and always there are lurking photo-opportunities.

On the Menu today some Adelie’s, an inquisitive Emperor and seals. Seals are mostly encountered in a group of three. I do believe a Mum a pub and a male. Though it looks like a lot of mums don’t like the Male coming close to the pub. On the work front I am getting some reading done and still tinkering around with some equipment, though it’s mostly refining.

Last message of the day and voyage update: due to ice conditions we will steam back north and will try following a lead visible in satellite imagery further in the west. Minimum delay for arrival at Davis station 48 hours. Though due to ice conditions there is no ETA (estimated time of arrival).
