Sunny Day on Deck |
Woken up by sunshine through the port hole, with a low
swell, one may even say nice calm conditions as we expected the worst. A bit
disappointing - you know – though likely very welcomed by the majority. The day
once again started with a yoga session – a nice way to start the day. On day
two of my fitness program I actually remembered again a few old poses, I had
forgotten about yesterday. The day really started with a good breakfast and
then into the routine of file consolidation and starting some email, first real
work discussions and sorting through a bit of gear.
I established myself in front of one of the bulls’ eyes in
the conference room. In front of me my laptop my external USB powered screen,
two USB, modems and four, actually five external hard drives totalling 10.5 TB
of file storage space. The table top lined with anti-slip matts to prevent
computers and other items from slipping of the bench. To my left a cuppa and to
my right my thermos with the supplies. In the background the constant noise of
the ship. Dependent on the swell one hears the compensation pumps moving
ballast from one side of the ship to the other. The dull vibrations of the
diesel motors, from time to time a wave splashing against the window. Looking
up I can see the white crushing waves passing by along the outside of the ships
hull. The ships watch to the left showing the time two hours ahead. The Big
Disk now showing 1.7 TB and the works and personal SSD drives consolidated to a
large degree. The picture disk sorted and ready for more action.
Nice wave crashing over the bow |
More action came in the afternoon. The dull noise and
vibration of engine got more and more frequently interrupted by some minor
quakes as the ship was steaming ahead rolling and twisting and rocking against
the increasing swell. Up on the Bridge, one could see waves crashing on the bow
of the ship, splashing high up over the front of the ship and drenching the
windows of the bridge. The windshield wipers active clearing the sight.
Watching this for a while I ventured off exploring the ship and looking for a
nice spot to capture the scenery without a glass front. I found this on the
floor above the troll deck. Nicely covered underneath the Heli deck one is
protected from the elements, yet there are nice holes to the side and railing
to keep you safe. A perfect spot especially as the sun was shining on this side
of the ship. The water glistening and glimmering. Sea-birds sailing between the waves. Small
and large. Spectacular.
Sunny Reflections |
True Sailors of the Sea |
After dinner Rick gave a nice presentation to all of us on
his work on microbes in the lakes around Vestfold Hills. Very interesting work.
A bit more struggling with file management, downloading of
images and once again bed time. A wait its bumpy outside so lets head up to the
bridge and have a look.
The bridge dark, curtains drawn to prevent distractions. The
Bridge manned by the 2nd mate. The bow of the ship slightly
illuminated by the ships light. In the far distance the last shimmer of the set
sun night sky in between some clouds. All over darkness the ocean dark black
with many white crowns. Waves rolling on braking on the front of the ship.
Lifting the ship high up and rolling it down into the troughs. The ships
engines working hard pushing the ship forward. The ocean rolling and the ship
sometimes sailing smoothly sometimes hitting the potholes. Lifted high up over
some darkness the ship smashes into the next wave, water splashing highest over
the deck. Yesterday this usually repeated itself two three times. Perfect
timing then a lull and calm for a minute or so before the next rocking and
splashing. With this image in my head I finally sneaked back into my cabin
after another quick check that all of our gear is safely secured, to not slide
off any table even if the ship would flip upside down.
Sweet dreams my friends.
