As spectacular the sun-set was as spectacular was the sun
rise. Getting up early I also was rewarded with two whale sightings. One
humpback breaching the frigid waters and another one which I still need to
determine what kind it was. The morning sky in all shades of grey, pink and
blue and the sun reflecting on the water golden.
On the business side today started with the second part of
our GPS navigation training. As an exercise we planned different routes across
the Vestfold Hills. Out and about, and the old fellows could tell us all about
how these trail will be in reality. Water in the mouth of every hiker.
In the afternoon we had the opportunity to tour the engine
room, the heart of the Aurora Australis. Amazing work our mechanics are doing
every day to keep us moving. Two engines, actually everything is made of two,
mainly to have redundancy built into the system. If one fails and you have only
one then you are in deep … .
Out of the dungeons of the Aurora we resurfaced at the back
of the Aurora. Up onto the bridge in the mean while we reached the first ice
and I saw my first Emperor Penguin. An impressive sight even though the penguin
was some distance away, I still could catch a good snapshot. After two short
nights I took an early night.
